How overtime pay is worked out

Add up everything you earned at straight time in the workweek — hourly pay for every hour plus any non-discretionary bonus, commission or shift differential — and divide by all hours worked. That is your regular rate. Each overtime hour then earns half of that rate on top of the straight time already counted (or a full extra rate for double time).

Your state can only add protection, never take it away. So the calculator applies the federal 40-hour rule everywhere and layers each state’s extra triggers on top, paying every hour at the single highest rate that applies. The week grid shows the result day by day: grey is regular time, orange is time and a half, black is double time.

Quick answers

How much is overtime pay in Texas?

Texas has no overtime law of its own, so the FLSA rule applies: at $20.00 an hour, a 50-hour week (five 10-hour days) pays $1,100.00 — 40 hours at $20 plus 10 hours at $30. There is no daily overtime and no Texas income tax. Texas overtime calculator.

How is California different?

California pays overtime after 8 hours in a day, double time after 12, and a seventh-day premium. The same $20.00 worker doing four 12-hour days and a 2-hour fifth day (50 hours) earns $1,160.00, because 16 hours are daily overtime rather than 10. California overtime calculator.
