Minnesota Overtime Calculator

Minnesota’s overtime law kicks in at 48 hours, not 40 — but only for jobs outside the FLSA. Almost everyone in Minnesota is owed overtime after 40 hours under federal law, and Minnesota taxes all of it.

What the calculator leaves out

Minn. Stat. § 177.25

The statute requires 1½ times the regular rate after 48 hours in a workweek, lets the state and its political subdivisions give compensatory time at 1½ hours per hour instead, and exempts sugar beet hand laborers on piece rate. For FLSA-covered workers the federal 40-hour rule controls; switch on “Not covered by the FLSA” only if your employer truly sits outside it.

02

One rate for every employer

Minnesota used to have separate large- and small-employer rates — $7.25 to $9.50 in 2016. Since then they were unified, and the single rate of $11.41 rises to $11.87 on January 1, 2027. The 90-day training wage for workers under 20 goes from $9.31 to $9.68.

03

Claims and payday rules

The Department of Labor and Industry’s Labor Standards Division helps workers file wage claims (651-284-5075 or dli.laborstandards@state.mn.us). Current employees must be paid at least every 31 days on a regular payday.

On taxes, Minnesota starts from federal AGI and has no overtime subtraction. HF 3524 / SF 3739 would have created one that outlasted the federal deduction, but neither became part of the omnibus tax law signed May 27, 2026.
